Going Curly

Trying to get ready at 7am when your face feels like melting off is kinda tricky. Halifax has been like this since early June with our apartment staying at a toasty, constant 30 degrees... even with all windows open and two fans going.

The thought of blow drying my hair just makes me want to vomit. Sadly I don't have straight hair... and I don't really have curly hair. I have frizzy, wavy hair that sometimes curls.

Whatever, I couldn't handle the blowdry+flat iron routine in the heat.

So... all summer I've been putting (not so great) product in my hair and scrunching. There are days when it's not so bad, but the past two weeks have been horrendous. (I'm guessing it might have to do with the sad return of the synthetic hormone pill into my life... but that's another discussion).

The good thing about these faux, almost curls, is that pony tails look pretty darn great. A little bit of curl and we're good to go.

It also feels fantastic in the morning- cooling off my neck.

(my hair, somewhat curly, last weekend. Oh and Andrew :) ).

I've wondered just how much energy I've been saving by not blowdrying and flatironing my hair every morning. Probably not THAT much, however I know my hearing is thanking me (blow dryers can be loud, and you put them DIRECTLY in front of your ears). Also, I think it might be negated by the curling products I've had to use...

Although I was successful in creating a fantastic (and yummy smelling) hair pommade for Andrew using beeswax, that he still uses every day, I'm not exactly keen on trying to recreate the curl enhancing product for my hair. What I do think I'll try to recreate is the shining liquid that decreases frizz. I think it's some sort of synthetic petroleum based oil (ick!) and I wonder if natural oils would be absorbed too quickly into the hair, or if there is a type of oil that would be a happy medium?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Have you changed your hair routine for the humid, icky, summer?

  1. Please let me know if you come up with something! I have tried coconut oil and it just makes it really weird. I would love to be able to use something that I could just whip up that works all of the time. My hair seems to tire of products...:(

    1. I use coconut oil, not sure what you mean by weird, it works great for me. Key points: curly hair needs moisture and not to be messed with. I shower, brush it back, spread through some coconut oil (less than a Tbsp worked through your hair), part and scrunch. Then I put a bobby pin in and don't touch my hair again. It will air dry but the oil means it never really looks dry. If it gets a bit frizzy I just add a little water (my hair is thick enough I use it to dry my hands). You'll have to find a system that works for your hair but coconut oil works year round for me.

    2. I think coconut might also be too oily for my hair- but then i have easily oil-i-fied hair...
Tina- so true about the not being messed with- that took years to figure out!

  2. I've heard of using flax seeds to create a gel for curly hair but I've never tried it myself. Here's a link with a video - it's just the first one I found on google http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/products-ingredients/diy-flax-seed-gel-for-curly-hair

  3. I recently cut all my hair off to stop using hairdryer/irons/product. Works a charm!

  4. Aveda has a great curly hair pomade BE CURLY, maybe "browse" and read the label to figure out what the base is for it? The key to living with curly/wavy hair? Come to terms with the fact that on any given day it could be a fantastic hair day or a whacko day. Both in the same day is possible! My hair is curly and it only took me 30 some years to figure it out (my childhood pictures are horrendous, my mom doesn't know anything about curly hair!). The other thing that's great for curly hair--- Sea spray to mimic being at the beach. I've seen lots of recipes for that online.

Whatever you do, don't give in and buy the anti-frizz junk, it's expensive, not great for the environment and doesn't even work! I fell victim earlier this summer. :(

    1. actually... the Be curly is what i've been using. I checked the ingredients- of course some scary stuff (but I've had this product for a while, since I'm only a go curly in the summer). i think it's the wheat protein that helps it lift....

  5. Check out this site. http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlproducts/search They have tons of curly hair related products. I personally love the Shea moisture line, which can be purchased on the above site or Target.

  6. I have been thinking lately about trying aloe vera gel in my hair. I use it on my face already, and it's moisturizing without being oily. I think it might control the frizz (I have wavy-sometimes, not curly hair also) but I haven't tried it yet.

  7. Have you ever considered going no-poo and using a baking soda/water combination to wash your hair? I've read a lot about it and plan to try it as soon as my shampoo runs out. It supposedly brings hair back to it's natural state (since conventional shampoos strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, creating a vicious cycle of your body over-producing oil to compensate) and cuts WAY down on frizz. I have wavy/frizzy hair and I'm really helping going no-poo helps with that situation! :)

  8. This is an herbal detangler recipe that I've been meaning to review for months (I'll try to get to it this week!) and I love it. It actually gives my sad waves a little boost, too, so it might work for your curls!

  9. I just have to say that 30C sounds freaking amazing! It's finally *dropped* to that here, from highs last month of about 40C. :) Oh wait, you said that was the temp *inside* your apartment...that would be less than comfortable indeed. Also, I am completely unhelpful re: your hair woes because I keep my stick-straight hair chopped off. But I do think you are beautiful!
