The BEST DIY Whipped ChocoCocoMint Body Butter!

Despite the fact that Nova Scotia is almost completely surrounded by ocean, as of yesterday we have officially switched the "suck out all the moisture from the air and dry out your skin" season. And I had JUST run out of body butter last week- Hooray!
Look at all that whipped moisturizing stuff!

Thank goodness it's just so ridiculously easy to make whipped body butter, or I'd continue to be a flaking, itchy mess.

I am now creepily smelling my fingers every few minutes so I can inhale the delicious coconut, chocolate and peppermint scent of yumminess. I'm not even pretending to be subtle.

I tried this recipe about a month ago and it has been heaven. I've decided that this year for Yulemas everyone will receive a miniature gift package with ChocoCocoMint whipped body butter among other goodies. It'll be affordable, easy to make and delicious, all without the ick toxins.

I think the most challenging aspect of this recipe is actually figuring out how long to leave the oils to harden before attempting the "whipped" process. The first time I didn't leave it in the fridge long enough and had to re-chill and re-attempt- but the end result was great. This time I left it in slightly too long, but the end result is still pretty darn fine. I was panicking though because several recipes have all these descriptive type instructions with vague photos. Bottom line, if it doesn't whip up, rechill for about 15minutes and try again.

ChocoCocoMint Whipped Body Butter

Time needed: 1hr (15min of actual work time)

Ingredients:
(makes 1 cup of whipped butter)

2 tablespoons of Shea butter
2 tablespoons of cocoa butter
2 tablespoons of coconut oil (the smelly kind!)
2 tablespoons of a liquid oil of your choosing
10 drops of peppermint essential oil (or scent of your choosing)
5 drops of clove essential oil
All you need is four (or less!) ingredients and an essential oil (or not!)

(Note: of course you could substitute or double some of these oils. The trick for the whipped butter to keep it's substance and not fall apart is to keep the ratio at 75% solid oil at room temp and 25% liquid)

In a double boiler melt the oils together (I just put a metal bowl over a pot with a couple of inches of boiling water- instead double boiler!). Pour into a ceramic bowl, add essential oils and stir. Place in fridge for about 45min until a good inch around the edge has hardened and the middle looks kinda goopy. While waiting, read a fantastically fluffy (or good) book.
Unfortunately, I left mine in the fridge for too long- so it shouldn't have been this solid. But it still worked! Also, I added some oil that had herbs soaking for extra healing oomph. Some of the herbs escaped into my butter oil...

Scoop goop into a stand mixer. Set on 7 or 8 with the whipping attachment thingy and watch it go! The first time I tried this, nothing really happened except it looked a bit froth-y. If this happens to you, just rechill for another 15min and try again.

Just yellow goop when it's first scooped in!

Whip until it makes fluffy peaks (it should also thicken in consistency).

(You could potentially handwhip this, or maybe use a handheld mixer, or borrow a friend's standmixer- but then you'd probably have to share the spoils)
.
It's amazing how it turns completely snow-white in a few minutes!
yum yum!

Spoon into a small jar and Tahdah! Done! This lasted about a month for me, but that was because I LOVED the stuff and glopped it on every day. Put it on right after the shower, do a few things before getting dressed and the oil shouldn't rub off onto your clothing and within an hour should be all absorbed into your skin!
The most delicious body butter EVER!

  2. Do you think you could use the same mixer as the one used in making soap? I don't have any right now (don't use them in baking/cooking) and don't want to have to buy two.

  3. How important is the ceramic bowl? Would glass work?
