Can that possible be worth it when we aren't even sure what if any benefits are derived from taking vitamins?

Also, as Michael Pollan pointed out, our way of thinking is nutrionism and reductionsim (as you've also pointed to). We don't know everything about what makes an orange healthy. We can point to these vitamins we've isolated--look, it has Vitamin C!--but who knows what combinations it takes to absorb it and who knows what else is in that orange that we don't know about?! What if there's a Vitamin X that's most important of all? As with the nutrition store example of research they did in this post, where it comes from is a huge deal. Studies have been done where an orange chocked-full of vitamin C has been tested as it was freshly picked and then, one week later as it sat in a supermarket, it still tasted and looked the same, but the amount of vitamin C was ZERO. (Source: Simple Prosperity by David Wann)

OK, obviously I could go on and on, which I think just points to the fact that this was a great post! :)Electronic Goosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06161775422936225445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2965370542440002490.post-64944714617494930252009-04-24T23:28:00.000-03:002009-04-24T23:28:00.000-03:00It's difficult with supplements in general these d...It's difficult with supplements in general these days. You don't know if they would work, because it is not like curing a disease. Even if you get sick, you wouldn't naturally blame the fact that you are not taking enough vitamins.Samanthahttp://www.lifepassport.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2965370542440002490.post-39718357745996878372009-04-24T13:23:00.000-03:002009-04-24T13:23:00.000-03:00And it is for all these reasons (and a few more) t...And it is for all these reasons (and a few more) that I REALLY distrust supplements!

I can see them being prescribed when the body is SO far out of balance that it needs to be radically brought back into balance as quickly as possible, but in general supplements are not whole foods.

My one exception is for Cod Liver Oil, and that's because it IS a food and most of us can't get enough Vitamins A & D in our diets.

Thanks for submitting this to Fight Back Fridays today!

Cheers,
KristenM
(AKA Food Renegade)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
